Nanostructures and Nanomaterials


Course Description

The need for new, advanced materials and devices with new properties and characteristics, led to the development of nanomaterials. The course aims on the introduction of students in fundamental principles, technology development and characterization of nanomaterials with desired properties and functionality. Emphasis is given in the application of nanomaterials in all product categories. Relevant application fields of nanomaterials are: sensors, biotechnology, microelectronics, surface processing – materials protection, chemically active materials (catalytic coatings, corrosion resistant coatings, etc.), computers, telecommunications, opticoelectronics, optical (reflection, anti-reflection coatings, absorptive coatings, etc.), large scale applications (packaging, flexible electronic devices - flat display screens, solar cells, glass buildings, decoration, etc.).

  5. Nanomaterial synthesis 

Laboratory Practice

Lab Exercise 1: Carbon nanotube synthesis through CVD

Lab Exercise 2:

α) Nanomechanical Properties –  SPM

β) Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)

Lab Exercise 3: Nanoparticles synthesis through Sol – Gel technique

Lab Exercise 4: Contact angle measurement
